Just imagine Black Friday, but everything is books and every book is free!
Storybridge Free Book Fairs have been our primary method of distributing books into the community. Normally, each free book fair is managed by a Storybridge volunteer team that goes into the school to set up in their cafeteria. Thousands of books are unloaded and displayed on the cafeteria tables, organized by age group. Every student in the school receives a flyer and many reminders about the event for the week prior to Storybridge coming. Parents are highly encouraged to bring their whole family to this event in order to receive books for infants all the way up to 12 year-olds. Parents choose the books for the babies and assist the youngest children in their selections, while we encourage older students to choose the books that appeal most to them. Each child takes their new books home in a brightly-colored Storybridge cinch bag. The smiles they leave with are priceless! Prior to 2020, we would serve an average of 250 children in the span of about 45 minutes, sending thousands of new stories out into their homes. These events are family affairs, the flagship service of Storybridge, and feel like Christmas morning for all involved.
We adjusted our procedure to accommodate the 2020-2021 school year by enlisting the help of our amazing elementary school librarians! All Title 1 librarians were invited to host a week-long Storybridge Free Book Fair in their library. Together with their help and your donations, we have given over 37,000 books to over 8,700 children in Amarillo this school year alone.
